My Review

An Explosive Read ~ 5 stars

This turbulent  read follows on from the shocking events in Ruthless King. Donatello Vianci is one of the most crazy characters this author has created to date and it is a wild, white- knuckle ride!

We witness Donatello descending ever further into madness, driven by a combination of visceral grief and guilt, and Willow is compelled to tread a fine line to save her own life and that of others.  I loved that by the end of the book it is clear to Donatello, the reader and Willow herself that she is far from a willing victim – she truly is the Queen of Thorns as the title suggests and is not a mere pawn.

The read is a deeply psychological one and I was swept into a maelstrom of violence and unpredictable emotions of Donatello Vianci, a tragic and mercurial figure. The connection between him and Willow goes way back and she feels inextricably tied to him, whilst fully cognisant of the danger he represents. Their chemistry is a constant throughout the novel and I enjoyed that Willow, despite Donatello’s warnings, cannot resist pressing his buttons, challenging him to his breaking point.

I enjoyed meeting Misha again and am dying to find out more about Evgeni, whose voice the author introduces us to. The next instalment cannot come soon enough as I am itching to find out what happens next between Willow and Donatello and whether they will be each other’s destruction or salvation, not to mention the many unanswered questions relating to the wider story arc and the characters within it.

If you love dark mafia reads with the most tortured of characters you will love this and other books within the series.

*ARC REVIEW* ~ Sin of Silence (Sinner’s Empire Book 1), by Nikita Slater

#MafiaRomance #EnemiestoLovers #RomanticSuspense

Blurb

Immerse yourself in a Sinner’s Empire with International Bestselling Author, Nikita Slater’s, brand new mafia romance trilogy.

Loyalty. Pride. Family.

These are the only values that matter.

Jozef is both nephew and enforcer to the Koba crime family. He is ruthless, brutal and completely loyal to his family. Shaun is a doctor working in the Ukraine with Doctors Without Borders. She’s logical, kind and honest. Shaun has been trained on how to deal with hostage situations, but nothing prepares her for Jozef or the life he’s forcing her into.

From the operating room to an opulent glittering ballroom and a forced engagement, Shaun is wildly out of her depth. Every step she takes is monitored and the man who kidnapped her watches her like a feral dog preparing to strike.

Caught in a deadly plight, Shaun has no choice but to give her heart to a killer or become another victim of organized crime.

Sin of Silence is the first of three books in the Sinner’s Empire Series. The second book will release on February 27th, 2021 and the third book will release in Spring 2021. NOTE: Sin of Silence contains sensitive subject matter, with some scenes containing elements of PTSD and panic attacks, please read with caution.

My Review

Amazing mafia romance ~ 5 stars

I absolutely loved Sin of Silence, the new Romantic Suspense from Nikita Slater. It is a super start to a new series and I was hooked on the premise of the book as soon as I had read the blurb and glued to my Kindle throughout. Mafia romances are amongst my favourite reads and this is a powerful read, containing a strong, principled heroine and a brute of an anti-hero.

After her abduction by mafia enforcer Josef, the heroine Shaun is catapulted into a world of wealth and excess funded by organised crime. The author does an excellent job of describing the brutality of the kidnap and how Shaun and Josef respond to the evolving attraction between them.  There is plenty of tension between Shaun and Josef, as well as other members of the Koba family and the lovemaking scenes between the main couple sizzle.

The couple come from two very different worlds: Shaun is dedicated to saving lives and Josef to extinguishing them in his work for his Koba family, to which he owes his loyalty. I loved how despite this they are thrown together in an impossible situation – a forced engagement. I was left in suspense, wondering whether or not their mutual attraction and growing connection could be their salvation or their undoing.  In particular can Shaun survive in such a dangerous world and how can she cope with her growing attraction to a killer?

I was glad that he author did not sugar coat the lives lead by those involved in organised crime: the book does contain scenes of violence/threats of violence and elements of PTSD. This addictive and realistic read ends on a cliffhanger – the end just about killed me and I am itching to read the next instalment!

*ARC REVIEW* ~ Salvation: Paranormal Angel Romance (Realm of Flame and Shadow Book 3), by Christina Phillips

#paranormal #romance #angels #demons

Blurb

I just spent the best night of my life with the hottest guy I’ve ever met. Too bad he turns out to be my deadliest enemy – the Archangel Nathanael…

Half-demon Isabella has dreamed of bringing archangels to justice and there’s no way she’ll forgive Nate for his deception. Except it turns out he has no idea who she is… can this be the chance for retribution she’s been searching for?

There’s only one rule I live by. Never trust a demon.

Close to finding a rogue demon he’s been hunting for millennia, Nate’s not looking for any distractions. Until Isabella turns his world inside out and leaves him wanting so much more. But when he uncovers her true heritage, her betrayal rocks him, and he faces the choice of leaving her to her fate or breaking the only rule in his book.

With dark secrets threatening their survival, there’s no way an archangel and a half-demon can work together. But with the clock ticking, and danger stalking every move they make, the only way to save themselves might just be to save each other.

My Review ~ 5 stars

Captivating Enemies to Lovers Romance

I make no secret that the enemies to lovers trope is one of my favourites when it comes to romance and Christina Phillips delivers in spades with Salvation, book 3 in the Realm of Flame and Shadow series. This super read has a plot containing secrets, danger and deception and a hero and heroine who kept me entertained throughout with their lively  banter and sizzling lovemaking scenes. Although the book includes characters who feature in the earlier books (whom I loved meeting again), it works perfectly well as a standalone, Nate and Isabella’s relationship being at its core.

Archangel Nathanael’s hatred of demons goes back a long way – fooled by one once he has vowed never to be taken in by one of their kind again and he is pleased that at last he almost has his arch enemy, the demon Dagan, in his sights. Yet fate has a way of screwing with his good intentions when he crosses paths with Isabella, whom he believes is a human. Similarly Isabella has been taught that archangels are a demon’s natural foe and she would never have hooked up with him if she’d known his true identity. When their destinies become entwined can they trust each other? Not only that but can they save themselves or each other when neither are fully aware of what is at stake and who is involved?

I loved the chemistry between them and I was on pins throughout waiting for the scene where Nate discovers Isabella’s true nature and I was not disappointed. Nate has issues with trust, especially when it comes to demons and bears a heavy weight on his shoulders for past events for which he holds himself responsible. Although Isabella lacks a sense of belonging and has been hurt in the past I really liked her inner strength. I was glued to the read to see how their relationship would play out, who they would side with when the chips were down and whether they could overcome their differences.

Recommended for readers of paranormal romance who like tales of feisty heroines who are able to bring even the most stubborn of celestial beings to their knees.

AA Abbott

Blurb

David must find Emily and silence her. As he closes in, Jack faces the hardest choice of all. If he saves Emily, he’ll kiss goodbye to his future…

What would you sacrifice for love?

This book has content that may be difficult for some readers.

My Review

Gritty and realistic ~ 5 stars *****

Well done AA Abbott for penning this thoroughly engaging read. It is both gritty and realistic, not only in how it portrays the sensitive issues of abuse, but also the difficulties faced by those who are compelled through one reason or another to live on the streets.

Emily’s relationship with her step-father David is toxic almost from the off, and finally his inappropriate actions cause her to flee from her wealthy home, finding herself on the streets in the heart of Birmingham. It is here  she meets Jack, who has his own difficult past to cope with. Jack takes her under his wing and they find themselves becoming ever closer. I was not sure what Emily would have done without Jack but it becomes clear that Emily will have a big impact on his future.

I found it to be a thoughtful and compelling read. It has some excellent characterisations, particularly of Emily and Jack. The portrayal of David is chilling and he truly was the villain of the piece. I enjoyed how the book has a strong sense of place in its descriptions, especially the underbelly of Birmingham where much of the book is based. The issues the book deals with are well researched and sensitively portrayed and I was gripped until the end.

Recommended to fans of psychological thrillers or to anyone looking for a riveting read.

Prologue

The thunder sounded like an angry god cracking his whip, and although Madison O’Riley had done nothing to provoke the wrath of any higher beings, it felt personal.

Despite the blast of the storm, she hastened up the ladder onto the roof, intent on fixing the leak, refusing to surrender to a little rain. Okay, a lot of rain, she thought as the sprinkling turned to torrents.

The old clapboard house perched on a hill at the outskirts of town, and from this height, she could see the entire valley pulsing as silver lightning blossomed in the spiteful, pewter sky. Gritting her teeth, she pulled herself onto the roof one-handed, the fingers of her free hand like a sprung trap around the caulking gun.

Her feet slipped on the slick shingles but she maintained her footing, walk-crawling up the pitched roof, proud of her stick-to-itiveness. Half-blinded by the rain and nearly deafened by the overhead holocaust, she scrambled and scurried, searching for the fissure. Between two shingles a few feet from the brick chimney was a small crack. It didn’t seem big enough to account for the amount of rain that now pooled in her living room. “Seriously?”

The sky, as if letting her know that, yes, it was quite serious, flashed and pealed out another crash. It was closer than she’d thought. This probably wasn’t a very good idea. But she’d just had her oak floor re-finished and couldn’t afford the thousands of dollars of damage the rain would do. It needed to be fixed now.

She eyed the tube of roofing tar, recalling the instructions the clerk had given her. She placed the nozzle near the fissure and squeezed the caulking gun’s trigger. A blob of black goop oozed out and she covered the crack. “Perfect.” Her dignity intact, she stood.

Madison hadn’t prepared to be a homeowner. It had been thrust upon her when her mother signed over the house and business to Madison and left for Las Vegas to spread the word of God. Homeowner duties had been learn-as-you-go and she was pleased that patching the roof wasn’t beyond her abilities. Much easier than installing the koi pond. She’d gotten in over her head with that one – but she’d triumphed. She glanced down, saw the pond was nearly flooded and was glad she’d taken the time to lay a stone edge around it as Bart Aberdeen from the pet shop had suggested. All she needed now was koi.

A tine of lightning ripped across the sky. Thunder boomed, crashed loud enough that she felt its echo in her teeth – then trailed off, growling like a starved dog protecting its bone.

The seal looked to be holding and, under the advisement of the skies, Madison headed for the ladder. Stepping down the sloped roof, her shoes lost traction and her feet shot out from under her. The caulking gun flew as she windmilled for balance. The gravelly asphalt raked her elbows as she came down hard on her tailbone. A sickening thunk! resounded and a flash of white blinded her as the back of her head smacked the brick chimney. Pain bit her, crippled her, and she rolled down the slope, a tattered rag doll. Though barely conscious, she felt the roof disappear beneath her. Then she was freefalling.

Help me! she thought, unable to scream, to speak.

In the dream-like instant of her descent, the sky flashed – not lightning, but a shooting star streaking toward earth.

She plummeted into the koi pond below.

Icicle-cold, the water stole her breath. She panicked, tried fighting, but body and mind had parted company. She sank, paralyzed as blurred ribbons of blood rose and eddied around her. Like a failing bulb, her vision flickered and went out.

She was not aware of any time having passed. As if waking suddenly from a nightmare, she shot from the water, gurgling and choking, her lungs starved of oxygen. Splashing, writhing, her nails bit into bare shoulders and with the sound of rusty brakes, she sucked in a deep lungful of air. The black world resolved, and she glimpsed the face of a man, a stranger – no, not a stranger, not exactly. I know you, don’t I?

She gagged, clawed for purchase. Water gushed from her nose and mouth in explosive bursts as her lungs purged themselves. She locked onto the stranger, her fingers like anchors in his bare arms. Seconds later, she was on the sodden earth, on her back. She coughed, vomiting water. Hands clutched her head, turned it to the side, and water spilled from her mouth and nose like unspooling ribbons. More gurgling, more body-wracking gasps. Her vision came, dissolved, settled midway between blindness and sight.

A mouth covered hers, blew, and Madison’s lungs expanded with borrowed breath. As if the man were blowing on dying coals, warmth glowed inside her, spreading and swelling through her solar plexus, expanding, reaching her limbs, bringing heat to her skin and clarity to her mind. She could breathe, she could see, and what she saw was the stranger’s face.

Handsome. Full lips, strong cheekbones, eyes she couldn’t yet fathom. Close-cropped, golden hair backlit by a near-blinding halo of light. Yes, she knew him from somewhere – but where?

The warm buzz swam through her. Her fingers and toes tingled. She was losing consciousness again, but she didn’t care; the panic was gone. As the world pulsed in and out, the man leaned over and blinked black-lashed silver eyes at her. Not gray, but silver. Bright and shining, like disks of polished steel. The light behind him swelled and brightened just before the world relapsed into black and nothingness wrapped itself warm around her.

Prominence

From what little he’d seen so far, there was nothing prominent about the town of Prominence. It had taken former Crimson Cove deputy Nick Grayson six hours to drive from his old home on the coast, to his new one on the slopes of the eastern Sierras.

Midway between Bishop and Bodie, Prominence was mostly high desert, with intermittent spatterings of thick, tall pines and firs. He hadn’t seen much of the town yet but intended to explore it after checking out his new place, which came with his position as Chief of Police. He pulled up to the residence and killed the black Highlander’s engine.

It wasn’t too shabby – an L-shaped, wood-trimmed, stucco ranch house with two tall sycamores out front, complete with a two-car garage, and what might be a decent lawn come spring.

He found the house key beneath the faded welcome mat where the landlord – one Jeffrey Gimple – said it would be waiting for him.

Inside, he was struck by two things: the stale scent of inactivity, and the dusty, lime-green drapes that covered the windows. Those have got to go. The living room was spacious with a blessedly new beige carpet and freshly painted walls. It was furnished – Thank God – with a comfortable-looking tan leather recliner, a slightly ratty love seat, and a rump-sprung sofa. Against the far wall, directly across from the recliner, was a large television that would be great for watching sports.

Stepping to the sliding glass doors that spanned the living and dining rooms, he drew more gecko-colored draperies and stared at the backyard. The earth was still wet from a rare valley downpour, but there was plenty of room on the patio for his barbecue.

Down the hall, he found a cramped bath with a stained sink, a tub, and a questionable-looking toilet. Beyond that were three bedrooms. One had plenty of space for his rock polisher and stone collection, another would serve as his office and music room – a sturdy old desk and chair were already in place – and the last was the master bedroom. My bedroom. It was complete with a queen-sized bed and a much nicer bathroom with a tiled shower behind a clear glass door.

He gazed out the small window, saw the tall redwood fence that surrounded the backyard. Plenty of privacy. He smiled. The half-acre plot was wide and fairly deep, keeping the neighbors at enough distance that he could play his guitar all night without disturbing the peace.

He walked back up the hall, through the living room and dining room, which contained an old oak table and chairs. The kitchen was roomy with simple light wood cabinets, and had all the appliances – there was even a washer and dryer. Leaning against the yellow tile counter, he pulled his phone from his pocket. His former boss, Sheriff Ethan Hunter, picked up on the second ring.

“I’m alive,” said Nick.

Ethan laughed. “Well, how’s Prominence?”

“Not too exciting so far. I’m going to grab some lunch and have a look around this afternoon.”

“And what about the house?”

He cradled the phone between his ear and shoulder as he shook dust off the ugly green drapes. “It’s decent, except for the drapes. Plenty of room for me, myself, and I.”

Ethan chuckled. “Anything’s better than the dinky place you had up here.”

“You got that right.”

The sheriff was silent a moment. “I hope it works out for you. You deserve this.”

“You bet your lily-white ass I do.” Nick cracked a smile.

“Well, we’ll miss you here.”

Nick coughed on dust. “Give my best to Sheila.”

“Will do. Call anytime … Chief. Oh, and Nick?”

“Yeah?”

“It’s a lot colder there in winter than it is out here on the coast. After you get settled in, text me your mailing address. I’ll send you one of my Aunt Vanessa’s sweaters.”

It was fairly well known throughout Crimson Cove that the sheriff knitted sweaters in his spare time, and to conceal his unmanly hobby, he’d created the fictional Aunt Vanessa in Oregon. Nick wouldn’t dream of bursting Ethan’s bubble and embarrassing him. Besides, though they were loud and unattractive, he was touched to receive one.

“Sure thing, Boss. It gets really cold here this time of year. Tell her thanks for me.” He ended the call, realizing he was going to miss Crimson Cove and its quirky inhabitants. He hoped Prominence would be half as interesting.

Hard rapid footsteps broke his reverie. They came up fast behind him. Nick whirled, drawing his Glock.

But the room was empty, the silence complete.

“Hello?” What the blue fuck?

He did a cautious walk-through in case a transient had made himself at home. Finding nothing, he locked up and took off to see what Prominence had to offer. The footsteps had spooked him and he was eager to be out of the house.

My Review ~ 5 stars

A battle between good and evil in another modern Gothic masterpiece

Alistair Cross once again excels himself with another of his modern Gothic masterpieces, this time set in the seemingly sleepy town of Prominence in California. I am a real sucker for books pitting angels against demons, as I just love tales of good versus evil. I therefore jumped at the chance to review the author’s latest novel Dream Reaper, which blurs the lines between paranormal romance, urban fantasy and horror and is an absolute delight for fans of these genres. Once more, as someone who is familiar with the author’s work, having read The Ghosts of Ravenscrest and Mother, which he co-wrote with Tamara Thorne and his novel The Crimson Corset I just knew I was in for a real treat!

When a handsome and mysterious stranger saves Madison O’Riley from a fatal fall, little does she realise that her life and that of the inhabitants of the town of Prominence will soon descend into the depths of the Twilight Zone. It is not long before Madison and others start to realise that the amnesiac who calls himself Alejandro, has powers which defy comprehension…

When the strange and compelling Gremory Jones and his associates arrive in town the book gets increasingly darker as Gremory’s intent becomes clear as he begins to ensnare the townspeople in his machinations. Add to the mix a psychic, a local priest, and the new chief of police, who is a recovering alcoholic, and the scene is set for a series of dastardly, dark and depraved scenes. The town succumbs to chaos and carnage, with its inhabitants merely collateral damage in a battle between good and evil. Rest assured though the read also contains plenty of scenes of humour and romance giving relief from the ensuing horror!

I just LOVED this thoroughly gripping and entertaining read and I was on pins waiting to discover if Alejandro would remember his true nature and protect himself, the town and the woman he is growing to love before it is too late.

The author’s characterisations are brutally honest, insightful and full of dark humour as he explores the human condition, lifting the lid on the private desires and personal hang-ups of the characters. The romance between Madison and Alejandro is a sweet one and due to Alejandro’s innocent disposition there are plenty of scenes where the author exploits this for comedic value. The new Police Chief Nick Grayson, who has come to Prominence to make a new start and to clean up his act, certainly has his work cut out with the temptations and increasing body count that the town throws at him from day one of his arrival! I enjoyed the pivotal part he plays in the emerging plot.

If you are already familiar with his author and/or you enjoy the work of Steven King and the cinematic genius of David Lynch you will savour this read as much as I did. Highly recommended!

Teaser: Ruthless King:

Sometimes it feels like I’m dreaming. That one day I’ll wake up and I’ll be that scared little girl again.

More often than not, I used to pray that day would come soon.

At least then, I’d stop dreading it.

My Review:

Dark and deliciously addictive. A fabulous start to a new series! 5 stars

I LOVED this dark and addictive mafia romance, which I inhaled over the course of one day. Ruthless King is the first book in Mice and Men, a spin off series set in Lana Sky’s War of the Roses universe. This intense read features revenge, betrayal and heartache, as well as scenes of blood and violence. The book can be read as a standalone but features characters from that series, not least Mischa and Ellen and Willow/Mouse.

The central characters, Willow and Donatello are so badly broken – my heart ached for both of them. Willow is devoted to her family but at the same time feels apart from it, forever haunted by prior events in her life and the man who betrayed her. Donatello is a tortured soul who desires to put his violent mafiya past behind him and ensure his heir has a secure future.

However, events spiral out of control, bringing Willow and Donatello together in a dangerous and sexy dance; the emotional connection between them is visceral. Shenanigans within the mafia world shatter Donatello’s plans for a peaceful future and he is left on the brink of madness. All that remains is a twisted desire to wreak revenge on all who have thwarted his hopes for the future. Willow duly finds herself within the grasp of a man where their past and present collide in a maelstrom of intense emotions. I found the book to be an emotional, character driven read, with a strong and inventive plot, effortlessly drawing me into the world depicted by the author.

I will divulge no more. Suffice to say that this is a truly awesome read for fans of dark mafia romance – it ticks all the boxes and more. I cannot wait for the next instalment of Willow and Donatello’s story.

~* ARC REVIEW*~ Summer Warrior (The Clan Donald Saga Book 1), by Regan Walker

#HistoricalFiction #Histfic #ScottishFiction #NorseFiction

Blurb

Somerled’s parentage was noble, of the Kings of Dublin, the royal house of Argyll and the great Ard Ri, the High Kings of Ireland. But when the Norse invaded Argyll and the Isles, his family’s fortunes fell with those of his people. When all hope seemed lost, he rose from the mists of Morvern to rally the Gaels, the Scots and the Irish.

Sweeping across Argyll and the Isles like a fast-moving storm, brilliant in strategy and fearless in battle, Somerled began retaking his ancestral lands, driving away the invaders and freeing the people from the Norse stranglehold. In doing so, he would win the title Somerle Mor, Somerled the Mighty, Lord of Argyll, Kintyre and Lorne and, eventually, Lord of the Isles.

This is the unforgettable saga of his path to victory that birthed the Kingdom of the Isles and won him the heart of a Norse king’s daughter.

Goodreads

My Review

A Spellbinding Tale ~ 5 stars

In Summer Warrior, the first book in the Clan Donald Saga, Walker weaves a spellbinding tale of heroism and adventure coupled with a touching love story.

The backdrop to the tale, encompassing Scottish, Irish, Norse and English history, is an expansive one, worthy of the title saga. For me the writing conjured up vivid images of royal courts, battles and the ever present windswept coast and sea that surrounds the isles.

As with the author’s previous works, the novel is meticulously researched, breathing life into characters and events from history. In this instance it is the little known Somerled, the Summer Warrior of the title, who, through his valiant actions, comes to be crowned Lord of the Isles, a Kingdom independent of his Scottish allies and from the Norse he vanquishes.

There is much in the hero’s character to admire. I enjoyed how Walker portrayed his singlemindedness and his determination to reclaim both his birth right and win the woman he loves. The story illustrates how adroit he was at playing the long game; outsmarting both his enemies and his allies through his skills on the battlefield and his diplomacy, which eventually rewards him with both his title and his heart’s desire. It is a hugely entertaining read that transported me from the present to the twelfth century.

The romance with Ragnhild, daughter of the Norse King of Man, is a sweet one and I enjoyed how Somerled managed to both vanquish his rivals in love and eventually gain her hand. Ragnhild is a strong character and the couple are well matched in outlook and intellect. There are a number of barriers to their courtship and I enjoyed how little by little the couple managed to overcome them, most especially the thrilling conclusion to their courtship.

Highly recommended to readers of historical fiction who enjoy tales redolent with the sagas of old.

*~BLOG TOUR PLUS ARC REVIEW & AUTHOR INTERVIEW ~* Not Just My Heart, by Em Taylor

#contemporary #secondchanceromance

Blurb

Six years ago, I’d made the stupidest mistake of my life.
I’d told Lacey Kendrick, I wanted to break up.
So she’d kicked me out her car, told me to move my stuff out her flat and blocked me on her phone.

And the stupid thing is. I hadn’t realised what a monumental idiot I’d been until I saw her, after all this time, in a pub in Glasgow.
The chemistry was still there. I could still make her laugh, blush, want me.
But boy, did she still hold a grudge. I was going to have to work to win her round. Lacey was worth it though. That smile. That body. The way she responded to my touch.
I was soon to find out, however, that winning her over again would be the easy part. I had a secret weapon when it came to her … in my boxers.
It was becoming patently obvious, however, that six years ago it was not just Lacey’s heart I had broken when I’d walked away from our relationship.

This is a second chance romance set in Glasgow, Scotland. It has adult themes and content.

My Review

Sexy and heartfelt romance ~ 5 stars

I loved this latest release by Em Taylor. This second chance romance is a heartfelt read with oodles of heat. It Is a story about finding yourself and your soulmate but also a tale of the importance of friends and family. Lacey and Rory have a lot of baggage to sort out and I enjoyed how they resolved their personal challenges and those they had as a couple, before they could contemplate their HEA.

The read, which is set in Scotland, contains some extremely sexy adult themes plus  emotional and sometimes humorous scenes and dialogue. The couple’s physical chemistry is assured but Rory soon realises just how hard he broke Lacey’s heart with his abrupt departure from her life six year’s previously. He knows he will have an uphill struggle to win over the girl he so carelessly discarded but what he doesn’t initially realise is that his actions had ramifications which went far beyond Lacey… Can he put things right and can he win the girl?

Lacey and Rory are meant to be together and I was rooting for them throughout. Yes, Rory had been a jerk in the past and I loved that he admitted it and tried to make things right – I adored the scenes where he tried his utmost to do this! Lacey is no pushover though and I loved her sass and potty mouth. This fun and emotional read has some great secondary characters too, who all partake in the general mayhem of Lacey and Rory’s getting back together – Lacey’s brother was a particular favourite.

Recommended for lovers of contemporary romance who like sexy and emotional reads with a sprinkling of humour.

Author Interview

1. If you had to describe yourself in five words, what would they be?

Honest, strong, bullsh*tter, sarcastic, funny (hopefully).

2. Please tell us about Not Just My Heart, your new release and what inspired you to write it?

I love country music and at the turn of the year there was a song playing constantly on Country Hits Radio called More Hearts than mine, It’s by a singer called Ingrid Andress. The song is about a girl taking home her boyfriend to meet her parents for the first time and how her mum will love him immediately, her dad will be horrid but secretly like him and her sister will be a pain. But the chorus keeps saying “if we break up I’ll be fine, but you’ll be breaking more hearts than mine.” A stark reminder that more than just the two people are involved in any relationship. It made me think what if they did break up. Would there be fall out if they got back together. And the story started to percolate and became a novel.

3. I know that you have written books in other genres, notably historical romance and paranormal/sci-fi romance. Do you have a favourite genre to write in and why?

I like them all. I’m pretty flighty so I go through phases of what I’m into at any given time. At the moment, it’s contemporary. At some point I’ll have a fabulous idea for another subgenre.

4. What is your writing process like? To what extent do you plan and how much do you just let the words flow?

It depends on the book. I had this one all planned out but I kind of strayed at times from the plan. My current one I have a synopsis as I’m not writing it solely for myself but usually I’m a pantser. I’m trying hard to do more plotting in the hope of getting more books out.

5. What about the personalities of your characters – are they always fixed in your head before you start writing or do they develop a will of their own? Both characters in Not Just My Heart are very strong individuals. Did you feel in control of them or did they throw some unexpected surprises at you?

These two had a will of their own but they are normal Glaswegians. Not many Glaswegians put up and shut up. Most will tell you what they think. But the characters do tend to develop a will of their own. I try to start out with uber dominant males but they never really turn out that way probably because I’d kick him to the kerb if someone told me what to do, lol

6. What is the best thing about being an author? What do you find the most challenging?

The best bit is being able to create something. I love to turn an idea into something tangible and in the end I know I’ve created something lasting even if only a few people are going to read it, The most challenging thing is finding the time and forcing myself through when the book gets hard to write, There’s usually a slump in the middle and one near the end for me and I start getting ready for the next one.

7. What type of books do you like to read? Have you any favourite authors?

Almost any romance. Haven’t tried any really dark stuff or BDSM as it’s not my jam. But I love most other types of romance. Currently loving Vi Keeland, Penelope Ward, Lauren Blakely, Corinne Michaels. Because I mostly listen to audiobooks, I do tend to listen more to the bigger named authors. I was ill a few years ago and wasn’t able to read so audiobooks became my thing and I never got fully back into reading,

8. Can you tell us about what books you working on at the moment?

My current book is one of the books in Vi Keeland’s and Penelope Ward’s Cocky Hero series. My book will be called Uptight Flyboy and it’s a spin-off from Playboy Pilot. One of the main characters is Trent who is the ex-husband of Alexa, who you meet in Playboy Pilot a few times.

9. Have you any advice to give to aspiring authors?

Don’t try to write to the market. Write what you want to write, It will come out more authentic. And don’t get caught up in social media drama. Just stay out of it.

10, And finally, have you a message for readers?

Please keep loving and reading books, It’s a wonderful hobby and the best way to escape the world at the moment. And talking of the world at the moment… stay safe.

About the Author

Hi. My name is Em Taylor. I  live in Glasgow in Scotland. I got into writing in 2011 when I started writing Star Trek Voyager Fan Fiction under the pen name Libby Kim. I then turned to writing my own stories, originally under the pen name Krystal Brookes. When I started writing Regency romances, I decided to do it under my own name. Since then I have written different sub-genres of romance- mainly contemporary, Regency, and vampire. Some of my own favourite authors are Vi Keeland, Penelope Ward, Lauren Blakely,  Lynsay Sands, Tessa Dare, Samantha Holt, Em Petrova, Molly Harper, JF Holland, Mary Balogh.

When I’m not writing, I work as a care assistant with people who have acquired brain injuries. The main passion in my free time is attending country music concerts, although that’s not possible at present. So I sing along loudly in my car.   I hope you enjoy Not Just my Heart which was inspired by a country music song called More Hearts than Mine by the uber-talented Ingrid Andress.

Soundtrack for Not Just My Heart

1. More Hearts than Mine by Ingrid Andress  – This song was the inspiration for the book. It describes taking your other half home to meet your parents for the first time and mum loving them immediately while dad pretends to hate him while actually liking him. Meanwhile the younger sibling  annoys them with lots of questions. But if they break up, more hearts will be broken than just the singer’s. So I wondered what would happen if that couple got back together and the ramifications for the family.

2. Beyonce – All the Single Ladies (Put a Ring on it).

3. Ride – Chase Rice

4. No one – Alicia Keys

5. Body Like a Back Road – Sam Hunt

6. Lady Marmalade – All Saints

7. I will always love you – Dolly Parton

8. Never Gonna Give You Up – Rick Astley

9. I can take it from there – Chris Young.

10. Six Feet Apart – Luke Combs  (Just because the book was written during lockdown and this song gave me hope throughout that life would get better).

*REVIEW* ~ Flame (Dragon Triad Duet #2), by Lana Sky

As danger looms overhead and her secrets are revealed, Hannah will have to trust him now more than ever.

My Review

Dark and Twisty ~ 5 stars

Flame is one dark and sexy ride from start to finish.

Following on from the cliff hanger ending in the previous book Moth, Hannah’s life is now even more entwined with that of Rafe, the Triad Enforcer. In fact her very safety may well depend upon his protection. However, can she trust this man as unfolding events reveal his secrets and what will he think of her own? Can Rafe protect Hannah from his enemies and what about her own nemesis who seeks to control her? The addictive and twisty read also contains dark subject matter including violence and reference to taboo themes.

To say more would spoil the read – suffice to say that I particularly enjoyed how the author skilfully wove the tale of how the secrets, lies and half-truths from both Hannah and Rafe’s past come to the fore. Alongside the suspense, the read is very character driven. The journey the couple embark on in the wake of their first combustible meeting in the previous book is particularly well portrayed by the author. Rafe is a complex mix of strength and vulnerability and Hannah has her own demons to contend with. Both are complex characters who need to learn to confide in each other despite their inner fears.

There are plenty of intense and emotional scenes, including scorching hot sex between the couple as they work out their relationship, whilst seeking truth and justice. Have they bitten off more than they can chew? Will they survive and above all can they trust one another given the high stakes?

Lana Sky certainly excels in this genre and once again I inhaled the read, drawn into her twisted plot and complex and damaged characters. Recommended for lovers of dark romance, romantic suspense and romantic thrillers.

*RELEASE DAY BLITZ & ARC REVIEW* ~ Warlord, by Jagger Cole

#steamy #romanticsuspense #romance

Synopsis

She wants me dead. I want her as my wife.

They call me a savage. A beast. A jungle warlord fighting a forgotten war in a place the world forgot. And believe me, that suits me just fine. No rules, no BS, no baggage.

That is, until the very second Isla Carrington steps off a plane and into my world as my captive.

She’s everything I’ve ever run from – brains, sass, and beauty. A literal royal duchess, for God’s sake. She also might be everything I’ve ever wanted. It’s dangerous for her to be here. Not because of the bullets, mortars, or the man-eating tigers that prowl this jungle. It’s dangerous because her being here temps me.

I should send her packing. But a rival wants my head on a plate after a misunderstanding. The only way I keep it on my neck is if I pretend my gorgeous captive is my new wife.

I threw myself into a jungle war for the freedom to be alone and escape the world. Now, I’ll do anything to keep her with me. And all to myself.

My Review

Fast paced and sexy as Hell ~ 5 sizzling stars!

This novella by Jagger Cole is a hugely enjoyable jungle romp and as sexy as Hell! It is the first book I’ve read by the author and his writing certainly packs a punch and presses all the right buttons. In fact it’s perfect if you want to spend an hour or two in the company of Killian, the alpha hero and Isla the sassy heroine who rocks his jungle kingdom.

When Killian double crosses Isla and makes her his captive, he soon realises that she is not the woman he expected her to be – instead she temps him like no other and has secrets of her own… He resolves to use her in a plan to save his own head and secure the safety of his private army. Cue for a fabulous story with plenty of smoking hot erotic scenes. The couple are a perfect fit for each other and I was quickly invested in their HEA. Yet will Isla agree to his plan and will it be enough to save Killian’s skin? Indeed, will Isla survive and do the couple have a future given the circumstances that brought them together?

I just loved the battle of wits between the two as they fall for each other, not to mention the action packed danger and suspense as the story unfolds.

Recommended for lovers of romantic suspense who enjoy plenty of heat.

About the Author

Jagger Cole likes his romance books like he likes his martinis—extra dirty, with a twist. A reader first and foremost, Jagger got his start with steamy romance almost ten years ago, writing especially dirty and somewhat perplexing Star Wars erotic fan-fiction for online message boards.

After deciding to hang up his writing boots, Jagger worked in advertising for a number of years pretending to be Don Draper. It worked enough to convince a woman way out of his league to marry him, though, which is a total win.

Now, Dad to two little princesses and “Daddy” to a Queen, Jagger is thrilled to be back at the keyboard.

When not writing or reading steamy romance books, he can be found woodworking, enjoying good whiskey, and grilling outside—rain or shine.
